Relaxing Yoga Nidra like Meditation for Calming the Nervous System

This post is to share a practice that is about 14 minutes long.

I encourage you to download the recording and listen to it on whatever device is convenient for you.

You can also listen right on this post below

A few brief notes about the Yoga Nidra Practice:

  • A brief breathing relaxation. 13 minutes long
  • MP3 on the blog – Link in the Description
  • Similar to Meditation but often it can in the deeper Brain wave state of Delta.
  • Delta is 0.5-4 Hz Brain wave – The Deepest state of sleep
  • We usually reach this state after we dream
  • Infants will spend a great deal of their first year in Delta
  • Slower Brain waves with more Amplitude
  • Recharging for the Brain and the body

A few things to keep in mind to get the most out of this practice:

  • To get the benefits you want to lie down in a quiet room that isn’t bright.
  • Make sure you aren’t going to be disrupted for 15-20 minutes.
  • Lie down on your back with your feet about hip distance away from each other. Your feet falling open.  (like Savasana)
  • Have your arms at your side with your palms facing up. Make sure your arms are a little away from your body so your shoulders, neck and arms are as relaxed as possible.

Setting an Intention:

  • Set the Intention you are NOT going to sleep. If you do it’s ok too.
  • It’s a good idea to set a basic intention for your practice.  If you don’t know what intention to set something like having a calm nervous system, more self-love or a deeper connection to yourself. Another favorite intention of mine is to experience more of a great feeling/experience you’ve had recently

Last reminders:

  • There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. Do your best… its better to be relaxed and imperfect than perfect.
  • See if with some practice you can get to a point where you aren’t consciously following my voice but you naturally follow the instructions without thinking about them.
  • Like all things we really aren’t going to see lastly benefit unless we practice something over time. If you do it once or twice, we might have a nice experience but chances are it won’t bring a lasting shift.
